How to Choose a Bass Amp

Regardless of whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there are amps that will meet your needs. A lot rides on your needs and budget, which are the two most important factors to consider when making your amp decision.
The first is to determine what type of music you want to play. As we mentioned earlier, the purpose of your amp purchase is to create the most appropriate type of sound for you to play. If you are starting out, you might consider getting a solid-state or “chocolate” combo amp. These amps are great for beginners because the price is right and the sound is good. If you find yourself playing gigs with more advanced players, you may want to invest in a tube amp. Tube amps offer a warmer sound that is good for just about any kind of music, and they also tend to have a little bit more gain and/or distortion than their solid-state counterparts. If you want more control over your sound and don’t mind paying a little extra, choose a modeling amp. Modeling amps are versatile tools, and many players use them in combination with other pieces of gear.

Does Speaker Size Matter?

Subwoofer cabinets can be difficult to produce loud enough, but when done properly, they can handle a large amount of power while delivering loud and powerful sound. It is important to have the right cabinet design.

Where to start? Well, let's talk about cabinet size. The 12″ and 15 cabs are always the best bet. The “monster” cabinets that fill the room are usually larger in size, but for some reason, they are called “big” cabinets!
The next step is speaker size. The best cabinet design will use two 10 ″ speakers. Exactly. No more.

The more speakers you have, the greater the ability to cover a wider frequency range. So in summary, if you need to move rooms, go with a 2 x 15 cabinet. If you just need a way to play alone or mix music with a few friends, go with a 2 x 10 ″ cabinet.
