Dolby Atmos means you have surround and speakers in the ceiling. Sound bars sit under your TV, so the sound comes only form in front of you.

Some sound bars will bounce sound off of walls and ceilings to simulate surround, but this can never sound as good as a proper surround setup. The designers of the sound bar have to guess where the walls and ceiling will be, and those guesses probably don’t match your particular room. Bouncing off of walls also means a longer path to your ears, and this can lead to phasing issues.

Dolby Atmos is intended to give you the ultimate immersive sound experience. And to get that, you need a proper setup with a large amount of high quality, well calibrated speakers installed by a person who knows what he is doing. You can not get this experience from a sound bar. Sound bars that carry the Dolb

Dolby is the last name of Ray Dolby. A man who created many different audio technologies from the 1960’s up until his death a few years ago. He formed the company Dolby Laboratories to develop and market his inventions, and he hired people who have been creating more audio and video tech through the years.

When you say just “Dolby” you could be talking about the man, or any one of the many technologies he or the company have developed over the years. Even “Dolby Digital” could me any one of a huge number of things. But since you are trying to compare to “Dolby Atmos” I would expect you to be comparing to a previous form of Dolby Digital Audio.

The original Dolby Atmos is a cinema sound format using a combination of channel and object based audio. It uses a 7.1.2 bed of fixed channels, and then adds 118 audio objects that can be used in many different ways. The audio objects can pan around the room or be located in any single speaker. An object can also have size so it can come from a group of speakers to make it larger, yet it can still move across the speakers. Dolby Atmos has become the leading immersive sound format for cinema and is branching out to other uses. A lot of music is now being produced to take advantage of Dolby Atmos.

The home version on Blu-Ray and UHD disks uses Dolby True HD lossless coding to fit this immersive signal into the bandwidth allowed on the disk. It is backwards compatible in that an older non Atmos Dolby True HD decoder can still play it in a fixed 5.1 or 7.1 format, and even mix it down to just Left/Right stereo to play out of your TV speakers.

Dolby True HD is still used for 5.1 and 7.1 movies and provides excellent lossless sound, but it does not have the object extensions. The bit rate of True HD is too large for most streaming services, so they mostly rely on Dolby Digital Plus. As the name suggests, that is am improved version of the original Dolby Digital AC3 5.1 standard that was used on DVDs. While Dolby Digital Plus is a lossy codec to reduce the bit rate, it uses very advanced coding to get much better sound quality out of a given bit rate. And it has also been extended with Dolby Atmos extensions. Many streaming services now offer Dolby Atmos over Dolby Digital Plus. It features the same backwards compatibility to allow non Atmos systems to still play it in mono, stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 formats. And if you have a Dolby Atmos equipped system, it can produce the full immersive object experience, all from the same bit stream.

Dolby is not the only game in town for digital audio, but they do seem to have the most support across the widest range of services. Even broadcast television in most countries as well as satellite, streaming, and cable all use some form of Dolby audio.
